The standard model of particle physics is a model (in particle physics): a quantum field theory that describes the fundamental particles currently experimentally known, containing. The Standard Model of Particle Physics (SM) is the theory that describes, well, everything with the exception of gravity (Yes, this is admittedly a pretty big exception). This post turned into a multi-part ongoing series about the Feynman rules for the Standard Model and a few of its extensions. Or is it something more exotic? Matter: electrons, neutrinos, quarks and other fermions,. I will try to be as general as possible, though at times it might get a bit tricky. I've always intended someday to try and write something like that, basically an explicit mathematical description of the standard model, aimed at mathematicians completely familiar with the technology of differential geometry. That's what physicists at LHC are mainly looking for right now. So let's talk mass and why this is still a very good thing for particle physics.
